In typography, a serif is a small projecting feature at the end of some strokes that make up letters and symbols.
A typeface with serifs is called a serif typeface (Serif typeface, Serifed typeface), and a typeface without serifs is called a sans-serif typeface (sans-serif, where sans comes from the French word sans, meaning "without").
Serif typefaces are widely used in traditional print such as books and newspapers. Many magazines use sans-serif typefaces; regardless of the effect the absence of serifs has on readability, some editors describe sans-serif typefaces as "cleaner".
