A screen reader is software that reads a computer screen aloud. Screen reader technology comes in two forms: PC-based screen readers such as Jaws, and web screen readers such as Voicemon Archived December 23, 2014 - Wayback Machine and Webtoks. PC-based screen readers are mainly used by people who are totally blind, while web screen readers are used to support web accessibility for people with low vision, people with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, people with cognitive disabilities, the elderly, multicultural families, and others. Recently, mobile screen readers built into smart devices, such as VoiceOver on Apple's iPhone, are also widely used.

Screen reader on MDN

A screen reader is a software application that attempts to convey what is shown on a screen display in a non-visual way (usually text-to-speech, braille, or sound icons). Screen readers are essential for people who are visually impaired, illiterate, or have a learning disability. There are some browser extension screen readers, but most screen readers work system-wide for all user applications, not just the browser.

In terms of web accessibility, most user agents provide an accessibility object model, and screen readers interact with dedicated accessibility APIs, using various operating system features and employing hooking techniques.

VoiceOver

macOS comes with a built-in screen reader, VoiceOver.
