Samba is free software that reimplements the SMB/CIFS networking protocol.

It was originally developed by Andrew Tridgell of Austria. Samba is distributed under the GNU General Public License. The name Samba comes from Server Message Block (SMB), the name of the standard protocol used by the Windows network file system. Samba version 3 provides file and print services to various Windows clients, can work with Windows Server domains, and can also act as a Primary Domain Controller (PDC) or as a domain member.

Samba can also be part of an Active Directory domain. Samba runs on most Unix and Unix-like operating systems, such as Linux, Solaris AIX, and the various BSDs, including Apple's Mac OS X Server (added in Mac OS X version 10.2). Samba is standard on nearly all Linux distributions and is also commonly included as a basic system service in other Unix-based operating systems.

Samba restart

On CentOS6, the following command may not be recognized properly.

$ sudo service smbd restart
smbd: unrecognized service

In this case, use the following.

$ sudo /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb restart

The ln command cannot be used in Samba or FTP for security reasons, so use mount instead.

mkdir /volume2/share/music
sudo mount --bind /volume1/music /volume2/share/music

Samba SELinux

If files cannot be written properly after setting up a share with Samba, check the SELinux permissions.

$ chcon -t samba_share_t /dir/to/share
