SCADA, or supervisory control and data acquisition (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition), generally refers to industrial control systems (Industrial Control Systems, ICS), that is, computer systems that monitor and control work processes based on the following industrial, infrastructure, and facility processes.

  • Industrial processes are manufacturing, production,

power generation, fabrication, refining, and similar processes, meaning the work procedures they require, and can be operated in continuous, batch, repetitive, or discrete modes.

  • Infrastructure processes are the processes, run by public agencies or private companies, required for water treatment and distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, oil and gas pipelines, electric power transmission and distribution, wind farms, air defense and civil defense systems, large communication systems, and so on.
  • Facility processes are the work processes, likewise run by public agencies or private companies, used in building, airport, shipbuilding, and space station projects. Here, HVAC equipment, access, energy consumption, and so on are monitored and controlled.
