Routing Information Protocol

The Routing Information Protocol (RIP) is a routing protocol that runs over UDP/IP.

RIP quantifies the routers that may be passed through as a hop count and dynamically exchanges routes with neighboring hosts using an algorithm called DVA (Distance Vector Algorithm). It determines the shortest path for a packet to reach the destination network address. It also adopts up to two valid routes, and by assigning fixed values it can control which route takes priority when routes with the same hop count exist.

Information such as the destination network address, the next-hop IP address, and the hop count to the destination network is recorded in the routing database within the router, and routers exchange this information periodically. The table of valid routes extracted from it is called the routing table.

RIP uses the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) as its transport protocol and is assigned port number 520.
