Open-source serverless platform
About
- A developer-friendly open-source serverless infrastructure platform that makes it easy to deploy & scale complex backends such as AI agents, real-time applications, and game servers
- An actor-based TypeScript library for state management and real-time processing, an open-source implementation of a concept similar to CloudFlare Durable Objects
- Provides long-lived processes, durable state, fast reads/writes, and built-in real-time (WebSocket, SSE) features
- Long-Lived Stateful Compute: runs like AWS Lambda, but keeps memory and has no timeouts
- Stateless Functions: suited to request-response work such as API servers
- Stateful Actors: ideal for building real-time services that keep in-memory state
- Sandboxed Containers: handle heavy jobs or untrusted workloads safely
Supported environments
- All-In-One: Rivet, CloudFlare Workers
- Compute: Node.js, Bun, Vercel/AWS Lambda (on the roadmap), Supabase (help wanted), etc.
- Storage: Redis, file system, memory, Postgres (still help wanted)
- Frameworks: React, Next.js, Vue (help wanted)
- Clients: JavaScript, TypeScript, Python (help wanted), Rust
- Integrations: Hono, Vitest, Better Auth, AI SDK (roadmap), Yjs (help wanted), etc.
Features
- Stateful Persistence
- Rivet Actors keep data in memory, and it is automatically and durably persisted to disk
- Suited to dynamic state management such as game lobbies, collaborative documents, and caches
- Lightweight client-service messaging built in
- Supports type-safe remote procedure calls (RPC) and broadcasts between clients/actors
- Enables a real-time communication architecture without an external message broker
- Services hibernate in idle mode and activate instantly when needed
- Long-Running actors go to "Sleep" when inactive and restore state instantly on the next request
- Provides Cold-Start Recovery and consistent Low-Latency from the end user's perspective
- Backend code can be deployed close to users
- For ultra-low latency, Rivet deploys Actors and functions to the global edge
- Supports HTTP, WebSocket, TCP, and UDP protocols, and can deploy to the global edge without an external proxy
- No limits on long-running processes or background jobs
- Supports any Docker-compatible container (if it runs on Docker, it runs on Rivet)
- Actor state is persisted continuously, enabling uninterrupted state recovery on failure/rescheduling
- Combined with intelligent routing, ensures high availability
- Spin up and test a local cluster instantly with rivet dev or Docker Compose
- Iterate locally before deploying to production
