An RFC (Request for Comments) document, meaning a document awaiting comments, is a memo covering new research, innovations, techniques, and so on applicable to Internet technology in fields such as computer network engineering.
At the Internet Society, engineers and computer scientists publish their ideas in the form of RFC memos, with the aim of seeking expert comment on their new ideas and information, or simply communicating those ideas. Sometimes it is also for engineering humor (see the April Fools' RFCs). The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) adopts some RFCs as Internet standards.
The RFC Editor assigns a serial number to every RFC document. Once an RFC has been assigned a serial number and published, it is never withdrawn or modified. If an RFC document needs changes, the author must republish the revised document as a different RFC. Therefore, some RFCs improve on earlier versions of RFCs and may also obsolete earlier RFCs. Through this overwriting approach, the series of RFCs listed in numerical order also represents the history of Internet standards.
