Free Tier Spin Down
Web services on Render's free plan automatically spin down (stop) after 15 minutes with no inbound requests (traffic), and start again when the next request comes in.
Things worth noting:
- Cold start latency: waking up again usually takes about 30 seconds to 1 minute. When a request comes in, it takes 30–60 seconds to start back up. dev
- Monthly usage limit: free instances get 750 hours of compute time per month (enough to run a single service 24/7). Render
- Workaround: a common approach is to keep the service awake by sending requests every 13–14 minutes from an external ping service such as cron-job.org or Uptime Robot, but Render does not officially support this or consider it reliable, and the intended solution for a service that must always be on is to switch to a paid instance.
