Remote Procedure Call

A remote procedure call (RPC) is a technology that allows a computer program to execute a function or procedure in another address space without the programmer coding the details for remote control. In other words, the programmer writes essentially the same code whether the function is local to the executing program or remote.
When software is programmed using object-oriented principles, RPC is called remote invocation or remote method invocation.
Sometimes many other technologies are used to implement incompatible targets, such as ONC RPC and DCE/RPC.
