Remote Desktop Protocol

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is a proprietary protocol developed by Microsoft that provides a graphical user interface to another computer.

The protocol is an extension of the ITU-T T.128 application sharing protocol. Clients are included in most versions of Microsoft Windows, including Windows Mobile, and also exist for many modern operating systems, including Linux, Unix, and Mac OS X.

By default it uses TCP port 3389.

How to change the remote desktop port number

On the Windows Server family it can be changed directly; otherwise it must be changed in the registry. 

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp

Change PortNumber at the registry path above to the port number you want.

Ubuntu RDP 

## 데스크탑 버전 또는 서버 버전 모두 가능하다.
$ sudo apt-get install vnc4server
## [우분투] 서버에 Xrdp 설치
$ sudo apt-get install xrdp

Enabling Ubuntu 24.04 RDP remote desktop from the CLI

Ubuntu 24.04 supports RDP out of the box through GNOME Remote Desktop (gnome-remote-desktop).

Check required packages 

sudo apt install -y gnome-remote-desktop

Enable RDP (gsettings) 

# RDP 활성화
grdctl rdp enable

# RDP 인증용 사용자/비밀번호 설정
grdctl rdp set-credentials USERNAME PASSWORD

# TLS 인증서 자동 생성 허용
grdctl rdp set-tls-cert /etc/gnome-remote-desktop/tls.crt
grdctl rdp set-tls-key /etc/gnome-remote-desktop/tls.key

Start the service 

# 현재 사용자 세션에서 시작
systemctl --user enable gnome-remote-desktop.service
systemctl --user start gnome-remote-desktop.service

# 상태 확인
systemctl --user status gnome-remote-desktop.service

Headless use (without login)

If you need RDP access starting from the login screen, use the system-level daemon: 

# 시스템 레벨 서비스 활성화
sudo systemctl enable gnome-remote-desktop.service
sudo systemctl start gnome-remote-desktop.service

# 시스템 레벨 자격증명 설정
sudo grdctl --system rdp enable
sudo grdctl --system rdp set-credentials USERNAME PASSWORD

Allow through the firewall 

sudo ufw allow 3389/tcp

Verify 

# RDP 포트 리스닝 확인
ss -tlnp | grep 3389

# 설정 상태 확인
grdctl status --show-credentials

NOTE

grdctl is a CLI tool available from late Ubuntu 22.04 through 24.04, and replaces the older gsettings approach. --user mode works while a GUI session is active; in headless environments, use --system mode.

Seamless environment using RDP

Windows: 

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Server Manager > Roles > Terminal Services > TS RemoteApp Manager
