Relational database

A relational database management system (RDBMS) is a database management system based on the relational model introduced by Edgar F. Codd of IBM's San Jose Research Laboratory. Most databases in use today are based on the relational database model.

Since the 1980s, RDBMSs have been the most widely used storage for information such as financial records, manufacturing and logistics information, and personnel data. Because they are easier to use and understand than the earlier hierarchical and network databases, relational databases have largely replaced them. Recently, however, new competitors have been emerging, such as XML databases and object-oriented databases, which arose to solve the mismatch between the object-oriented model and the relational model.
