Reddit is an American social news aggregation, content rating, and discussion website. Registered users (commonly called "Redditors") submit content such as links, text posts, images, and videos to the site, which is then voted on by other members. Posts are organized by subject into user-created boards called "communities" or "subreddits". Submissions with more upvotes appear at the top of their subreddit and, if they receive enough upvotes, ultimately on the site's front page. Reddit administrators manage the communities, and moderation is carried out by community-specific moderators rather than Reddit employees.
The site is a collection of posts submitted by registered users (essentially a bulletin board system). The word "Reddit" is a word that comes from words with the phrase "read it". The site's content is divided into numerous categories, and the most popular posts from these subreddits are shown on the front page to people browsing the site without an account. As of May 2016 there were more than 11,400 active subreddits.
