A subway (metro, underground), or underground railway, is an urban railway whose lines run underground. A subway is a type of high-capacity public transportation generally built in urban areas. Unlike buses or trams, a rapid transit system is a railway (usually electric) that operates on an exclusive right-of-way that pedestrians and other vehicles cannot access. It is often grade-separated in tunnels or on elevated railways.
