Ransomware is a type of malware that infects a computer system, restricts access to it, and demands a kind of ransom. Because access to the computer is restricted, the user is forced to pay the developer of the malicious program to have the restriction removed. Some ransomware encrypts data, while others simply lock the system and display a message to get the computer user to pay.
