RS-232 is a serial interface used to connect a PC to devices such as acoustic couplers and modems. An interface is also called a port, so it is commonly referred to as the serial port.
It was originally used to connect terminals and modems. The EIA (The Electronic Industries Alliance) of the US standardized for communication what CCITT (now ITU-T) had issued as the V.24 and V.28 recommendations. It defines the electrical and mechanical characteristics for connecting DTE (Data Terminal Equipment), such as teletypewriters and PCs, to data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE: Data Circuit-Terminating Equipment), such as modems, in order to transmit data.
The 25-pin connector specification is defined as the connector on the modem side, not the terminal side, so on PCs it is often found attached to the modem or similar device rather than to the cable itself. A widely used specification today is the 9-pin connector (serial port) made by IBM, which is widespread. It was later added to the standard as ANSI/TIA/EIA-574-90.
Today the standard is classified as a legacy interface, and its role is being taken over by USB, IEEE1394, and the like for connecting peripherals, and by Ethernet (ethernet) and the like for communication. However, it is still useful for simple use when a signal must travel a long distance without being heavily affected by noise. Typically, data can be communicated normally over a single cable of up to about 10 m.
