The R programming language (R for short) is a programming language and software environment for statistical computing and graphics. It was started by Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and is currently developed by the R Core Team. R is an implementation of the S programming language distributed under the GPL, and is also called GNU S. R is widely used for statistical software development and data analysis, and because packages are easy to develop, it is popular among statisticians for developing statistical software.
