lastmod 2021-07-24created 2021-07-2413 edits

Adds window-tiling hotkeys to any X11 desktop. (An analogue to WinSplit Revolution for people who don't want to use Compiz Grid)

Dependencies

sudo apt-get install python3 python3-pip python3-setuptools python3-gi python3-xlib python3-dbus gir1.2-glib-2.0 gir1.2-gtk-3.0 gir1.2-wnck-3.0

only pip version

Installing everything manually with pip:

sudo apt install gir1.2-glib-2.0 gir1.2-gtk-3.0 gir1.2-wnck-3.0

## python3-gi
sudo apt-get install libcairo2-dev libgirepository1.0-dev
pip install pycairo
pip install gobject
pip install pygobject

## python3-xlib
pip install python-xlib

## python3-dbus
sudo apt install libdbus-1-dev
pip install dbus-python

How to install

git clone https://github.com/ssokolow/quicktile
cd quicktile
python3 setup.py build
python3 setup.py install
cp quicktile.desktop ~/.local/share/applications/

Getting started

  • Running python -m quicktile creates a configuration file at ~/.config/quicktile.cfg.
  • Open the configuration file and edit the key bindings.
  • Run it with python -m quicktile --daemonize.
  • If it works correctly, add it to the autostart list.

Troubleshooting

ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'gi'

See PyGObject#ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'gi'. In short:

sudo apt-get install libcairo2-dev libgirepository1.0-dev
pip install gobject pygobject
