Quartz (graphics layer)

Quartz is part of the graphics technology used in OS X, comprising the Core Graphics framework Quartz 2D and part of the Quartz Compositor. It supports 2D rendering in Core Graphics and the compositing engine, and sends commands to the graphics card. Quartz is sometimes used as a synonym for "Core Graphics".
As a more general term, "Quartz" or "Quartz technologies" can refer to the rendering layers of the compositor in nearly every part of the OS X graphics model. In this usage, the term also covers Core Image and Core Video, because it applies to the various graphics technologies Apple provides.
