Quantum mechanics (also quantum physics, quantum theory) is the branch of physics that deals with phenomena of molecules, atoms, electrons, elementary particles, and microscopic systems; that is, it studies the phenomena of systems of small size. It is based on the physical idea that "no matter how strange or absurd an event may be, as long as its probability of occurrence is not zero, it will necessarily happen." As the foundation of modern physics, quantum mechanics has had a major influence on many areas, including science and technology, philosophy, literature, and the arts, for example by explaining the principles of semiconductors, a key component of computers, and it is regarded as an indispensable theory in the history of 20th-century science.
