In quantum field theory, quantum electrodynamics (量子電氣力學, abbreviated QED) is the theory obtained by quantizing classical electromagnetism. In its simplest form it deals with the interaction between charged Dirac particles (electrons, quarks, etc.) and photons, and it extends naturally to Dirac particles of several flavors, scalar particles of several flavors (mesons, the Higgs boson, etc.), and vector particles (the W boson, etc.). Like classical electromagnetism, it is a gauge theory based on the abelian group U(1). It is part of the Standard Model and is the most precisely experimentally verified of the physical theories known today.
