When information needs to be exchanged between information devices, such as between computers or between a computer and a terminal, a protocol is an agreement on the various communication rules and methods defined to make that exchange smooth; in other words, a communication convention. A communication protocol defines things such as the mutual connection and delivery method, communication method, format of the data exchanged, error detection method, code conversion method, and transmission speed. In general, computers of different models have different communication protocols, so for information communication between computers of different models, a standard protocol must be established and adopted by each to build a communication network. A representative example of a standard protocol is TCP/IP, which is used on the Internet.
