Protein folding is the process by which a protein, a linear chain of amino acids, forms a correctly folded structure unique to that protein or forms a stabilized structure. Here, native folding refers to reaching an optimum while keeping energy loss to a minimum. The unique shape resulting from this folding is closely related to determining the protein's unique function.
