Progressive scanning is a video display method that displays the content to be shown on the screen in order from beginning to end.
When displaying video on a display device structured like a television, one frame of video is displayed by drawing line by line in order from the top left of the screen to the bottom right. Compared to interlaced scanning, it has the advantage of less flicker, so it can display a sharper picture.
Progressive scanning is used in most digital video display devices.
Pros
The advantages of progressive scanning are as follows:
- Increased vertical resolution. The vertical resolution of a broadcast signal received via interlaced scanning is usually equal to the actual vertical resolution multiplied by 0.6. For example, in the HDTV standard, a 1080i (1920x1080, interlaced) signal, despite having a higher vertical resolution, mostly shows picture quality slightly below or similar to 720p (1280x720, progressive).[citation needed]
- No flicker on fine horizontal patterns (such as checkered clothing)
- Video processing devices become easier to implement
- Easier to compress
- When capturing video recorded through an interlaced output device, the striping caused by two frames from different times overlapping does not occur. Also, many devices and software that output progressively have a deinterlace filter that corrects tearing caused by video recorded with interlaced scanning.
