Profiling (program profiling/software profiling), or performance analysis, is a form of dynamic program analysis that measures a program's time complexity and space (memory), the use of particular instructions, and the frequency and duration of function calls. Profiling information is usually used to aid program optimization. Profiling is performed by instrumenting and analyzing a program's source code or binary executable using a tool called a profiler.
