PROFIBUS (Process Field Bus) is a fieldbus system widely used in automation technology. It was started in Germany in 1987 by a network of 21 companies and institutions.
A distinction is made between PROFIBUS DP (decentralized peripherals) and PROFIBUS PA (process automation). The earlier variant PROFIBUS FMS (Fieldbus Message Specification) was replaced by PROFIBUS DP in 1993 and is therefore no longer part of the international fieldbus standard.
