Probability distribution

A probability distribution is a function that gives the probability that a random variable takes a particular value. For example, for a random variable representing the face that comes up when a die is rolled, its probability distribution is the discrete uniform distribution.
Depending on what kind of values the random variable takes, a probability distribution broadly falls into one of two groups, discrete probability distributions and continuous probability distributions, and some belong to neither.
