A privacy policy is a statement or legal document that discloses how a party collects, uses, discloses, and manages a customer's personal information. Personal information refers to information that can identify an individual in situations such as traveling or entering into a sales contract, including name, address, date of birth, marital status, contact details, ID number and expiration date, financial information, credit information, and medical records. It states which personal information is collected, whether it is kept confidential, whether it is shared with partners, and how it is transferred to other companies.

Privacy policies are significant in modern states because they are grounded in the individual's physical and moral autonomy. For that reason, they deserve constitutional protection. What a policy must contain may vary depending on the jurisdiction whose laws require it. Most countries have legislation and guidelines on who is protected and what information may be collected and used. In general, data protection law in Europe protects information in both the private and public sectors. It applies not only to the government's management of personal information but also to private companies and commercial transactions. In North America, data protection law (except in Quebec) applies only to the public sector, not the private sector. However, most private businesses in North America have incentives to develop their own privacy policies and codes of ethics.
