About
- Positron is a new next-generation IDE dedicated to data science, developed by Posit, the maker of RStudio
- It supports R and Python out of the box and is a multi-language (polyglot) platform designed for data science environments that mix several languages
- Architecturally it is based on VS Code's Code OSS, offering a familiar environment and rich extensibility, while adding features tailored to data scientists such as plots, variables, help, and a data explorer
- With the new R kernel Ark and Tree-sitter R grammar support, it further improves code execution, autocompletion, debugging, and documentation browsing, and can even debug mixed R and C++ code
- RStudio is still maintained and supported reliably, but Positron, built on multi-language support, extensibility, and a modern architecture, is expected to become the center of the data science development environment in the long term
