The PE format (Portable Executable) is a file format for executables, DLLs, object code, FON font files, and others used in the Windows operating system. The PE format is a data structure that encapsulates the information the Windows loader needs to manage executable code. It includes dynamic library references for linking, API export and import tables, resource management data, and TLS data. On Windows NT operating systems, the PE format is used for EXE, DLL, SYS (device drivers), and other file types. The Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) specification states that PE is the standard executable format in EFI environments.
