Normal vectors of a point cloud (Normal Vector; n-vector)

About

nx, ny, nz in a PLY file are the \(X, Y, Z\) axis components of the Surface Normal Vector of the surface on which the 3D point \((x, y, z)\) lies.

In discrete point cloud data, they indicate "which direction (the perpendicular direction)" the local surface at each point is facing.

1. Mathematical properties

  • Unit Vector: To represent pure direction information only, the vector's magnitude (length) is normalized to 1 when stored.

\[ \sqrt{nx^2 + ny^2 + nz^2} \approx 1 \]

  • Value range: Each component is usually represented as a floating-point (float/double) value in the range \([-1.0, 1.0]\).
  • Example PLY header definition:
element vertex 50000
property float x
property float y
property float z
property float nx
property float ny
property float nz

2. Main roles and applications

Position coordinates \((x, y, z)\) alone cannot tell the three-dimensional orientation of a surface, so normal information is essential for analyzing geometric shapes.

  • 3D rendering and Shading
    • Computes surface shading (Diffuse, Specular) from the angle between the incident light from a light source and the normal vector.
    • Without normal data, curvature cannot be discerned in a 3D viewer and the surface renders as if flat.
  • Surface Reconstruction / Meshing
    • In algorithms that convert point clouds into a Polygon Mesh (e.g., Poisson Surface Reconstruction, Ball-Pivoting), normals are the basis for distinguishing the inside/outside of an object and generating faces.
  • Scan Registration / Alignment
    • Used in the Point-to-Plane ICP algorithm for registering point clouds acquired from multiple angles, with faster convergence and higher precision than coordinate-based (Point-to-Point) methods.
  • Feature line extraction and Curvature analysis
    • Computes the rate of change of normal vectors between neighboring points to analyze plane segmentation, Edge detection, and curvature changes (weld beads, cracks, etc.).

3. Caveats when processing

  1. Normal Orientation consistency: There are two directions perpendicular to a local plane, front and back (\(+\vec{n}\), \(-\vec{n}\)). If they are not oriented to face the outside of the object relative to the sensor Viewpoint, faces get flipped (Flipped Normal) or holes appear when generating meshes.
  2. Directly acquired vs algorithmically estimated: Normals are sometimes computed directly by the scanner hardware/driver and included in the file, but if only coordinates exist, they must be estimated afterwards by PCA (principal component analysis) of the k nearest neighboring points using libraries such as PCL or Open3D.
