A podcast or netcast is an internet broadcast that lets users who want to watch or listen choose the programs they want and subscribe to them automatically. It is a series of digital audio or video files that users can download and listen to, and because it is often used with subscriptions, new episodes are automatically downloaded through web syndication to the user's local computer, mobile application, or portable media player. It differs from internet radio, which is associated with streaming.
It is mainly distributed by uploading media files such as MP3 to the web and publishing the address of an RSS file; podcasts are searched for and subscribed to with applications such as Apple's iTunes, and played directly on a computer or transferred to a digital audio player for playback. Regarding Korean spelling, '포드캐스트' (podeukaeseuteu) is the form based on the Korean loanword orthography, while '팟캐스트' (patkaeseuteu) is the commonly used form.
Podcast is a word combining the pod of iPod and the cast of broadcast. A distribution-subscription model like podcasting was created in 2001, before the word podcast existed, but the term podcast was first used in 2004. Many people think podcasts can only be subscribed to in iTunes, but in fact there are many programs that can subscribe to and manage podcasts. The term podcast can also be misleading, suggesting that an MP3 player such as an iPod is required to listen to them. Meanwhile, Creative Technology, which sells the Zen MP3 player, launched its own podcasting service, ZENCast, in January 2006 and introduced podcast as an abbreviation of Personal On Demand broadcast.
What sets podcasting apart from other online media is that it works by subscription, rather than having users choose or seek out media each time. The podcasting subscription model delivers files using the RSS 2.0 XML (or RDF XML) file format. (The enclosed tag is used within the RSS file.) Podcasting has enabled independent producers to create and offer their own radio programs. Listeners can use podcast subscription software such as iTunes to regularly check for new programs, download them, and listen. Some podcast subscription software also automatically transfers media files to an MP3 player. Recently, many podcasts delivering video files have been created. A podcaster's annual salary is at least 2,000 dollars.
