Play is an activity that humans engage in for enjoyment. It is distinguished from labor or work in that it is done without expecting material reward or compensation and is not forced from outside, although some views hold that labor also has a playful aspect.
Play is generally defined as a leisure activity for recreation, and play of Western origin that involves winning and losing is sometimes called a game.
Besides enjoyment, play is also done to gain experiences needed for growth, such as agility and sociability, a phenomenon found not only in humans but also in animals.
