A platform game (also platformer, jump 'n' run games) is a type of video game. As the name suggests, platform games feature platforms (footholds). These platforms include hills, stairs, and so on. For this reason, jumping is an essential element in most platform games. Many such games have the player move a character across various platforms while jumping and defeating enemies.
Platform games originated in the early 1980s, and 3D platform games became widespread in the mid-1990s. The genre was established by 1983, when jumping on platforms was becoming an essential element of gameplay.
