Platform as a Service

lastmod 2025-11-12created 2015-03-1219 edits

PaaS (Platform as a Service) extends the concept of SaaS to development platforms. It is a model that lets you easily rent the development elements you need over the web, without having to build a platform for development.

The OPEN APIs provided by Google, Naver, Daum, etc. are a kind of PaaS, and Google's 'App Engine' and Bungee Labs' 'BungeeConnect' provide platforms on which you can develop, deploy, and manage online services yourself.

About PaaS

What is PaaS (platform as a service)? Efficient application development and deployment

Platform as a service (PaaS) is a step further from full on-premises infrastructure management. In PaaS, a provider hosts hardware and software on its own infrastructure and delivers this platform to users as an integrated solution, solution stack, or service over the internet.

Mainly useful for developers and programmers, PaaS lets users develop, run, and manage their own applications without having to build and maintain the infrastructure or platform usually associated with that process.

Users write, build, and manage application code, but without the hassle of software updates or hardware maintenance. The environment for building and deploying is provided to them.

PaaS is a way for developers to create a framework on which they can continuously build and customize web-based applications. Developers can use built-in software components to develop their own applications, reducing the amount of code they have to write themselves.

Some examples of PaaS are AWS Elastic Beanstalk, Heroku, and Red Hat OpenShift.
