A physics engine (or physics computation engine) is computer software that attempts to simulate, as closely as possible, certain simple physical systems such as rigid body dynamics (including collision detection), soft body dynamics, and fluid dynamics. Such engines are used in computer graphics, video games, and film. They are mainly used as middleware in video games, performing simulation in real time. The term is also sometimes used to refer to software systems for simulating physical phenomena, such as high-performance scientific simulation. In other words, it is a software program used to achieve realistic physical effects in computer simulations.
