Phonetics (Korean: eumseonghak, 音聲學, IPA: [ɯm.sʌŋ.ɦɐk̚]) is the discipline that scientifically studies human speech sounds (and the corresponding elements in sign languages). In Korean it is also called malsorigal, bareumhak, seongeumhak, sorigal, eoeumnon, and so on. As a branch of linguistics, it studies which actions of which speech organs produce speech sounds, what physical characteristics the produced speech sounds have, and how they are transmitted and perceived. It differs from phonology, which studies the theoretical system of abstract sound units within one or more languages, in that phonetics analyzes the physical and concrete aspects of speech sounds.
