Philosophy of science is a branch of philosophy that analyzes and reflects on the achievements of the natural sciences in order to define scientific concepts, establish the premises of science, and investigate its methods. Because modern civilization has become markedly scientized, that is, mechanized and uniform, philosophy of science gives rise to the position that philosophical problems should also be solved through the analytic operations of a mechanical, collective scientific logic. Philosophy of science therefore rejects philosophy based on an individual's speculative methods. By contrast, the pre-modern position of examining nature through philosophy is called natural philosophy. And criticizing philosophy from the standpoint of science is called critique of philosophy.
