Philosophy (哲學, Ancient Greek: φιλοσοφία, English: philosophy) is the ability to treat a subject in the most excellent way using wisdom and knowledge.

In ancient Greece it meant scholarship itself, and traditionally philosophy meant an essential and holistic inquiry into the value and ultimate meaning of the world, humans, things, and phenomena. In addition, modern philosophy places considerable weight on philosophy of language, which discusses various topics through premises, which are thinking grounded in philosophy, problem clarification, conceptual rigor, and clarification of the relations between propositions.

It derives from the ancient Greek philosophia (φιλοσοφία, love of wisdom), where wisdom means not practical knowledge for everyday life but knowledge that contemplates humans themselves and the world around them. This includes, for example, worldviews, views of life, and values. Philosophy in this general sense has existed in every culture since long ago. Deep wisdom about the world is found even in societies without writing.

In the East, since Westernization, philosophy has often referred to Western philosophy in general, beginning with ancient Greek philosophy, but philosophy itself is not divided into East and West. Disciplines closely related to philosophy today include ethics, political science, psychology, history, and sociology.
