This is the latest version of the internal repository from Pebble Technology providing the software to run on Pebble watches. Proprietary source code has been removed from this repository and it will not compile as-is. This is for information only.

About

  • History of Pebble
    • Pebble first launched through a Kickstarter project, which was the most-funded project at the time. It sold more than 2 million smartwatches over 4 years and built a community of thousands of developers who made more than 10,000 apps and watch faces.
    • Fitbit acquired Pebble in 2016, and Fitbit was later acquired by Google, so Pebble OS moved along with it.
    • Although 8 years have passed since Pebble hardware and software support ended, many fans remain.
  • What was released
    • Most of the source code of the Pebble operating system was released. This repository provides all the standard smartwatch features running on ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers
    • Built on FreeRTOS, it includes memory management, graphics, and timekeeping modules, plus an extensive framework for loading and running custom apps written in C and via the Jerryscript Javascript engine
    • Some proprietary code was removed, notably code related to chipset support and the Bluetooth stack. So although the released code includes build system files, it cannot be compiled or linked as-is
  • Future plans
    • The hope is that this release helps the Rebble project's community and volunteers continue supporting Pebble watches
    • Building new firmware updates requires substantial work to replace the removed parts and update source code that has not been maintained for years.
