Partprobe

lastmod 2026-02-06created 2026-02-063 edits

A command that informs the kernel of partition table changes. After you change partitions with sgdisk or parted, the kernel may still be caching the old table. partprobe forces it to reread the table.

Usage

sudo partprobe /dev/sdb
# 이후 /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdb2 등이 즉시 사용 가능

If you skip this, you may get a "device not found" error when running mkfs or mount, and in some cases the partitions are only recognized after a reboot. blockdev --rereadpt serves a similar purpose.
