A part of speech (品詞, pumsa) is one of several groups into which words are divided according to their grammatical function, form, or meaning.

Grouping words into several parts of speech began with the study of Greek grammar. This carried over into the study of Latin grammar, and later the grammatical study of the various European languages also devised and discussed parts of speech. As the scope of linguistics later expanded to languages outside Europe, the concept of parts of speech came to be applied to languages all over the world.

Parts of speech in Korean

Current Korean school grammar classifies them into nine types: nouns, pronouns, numerals, particles (Korean: 조사), verbs, adjectives, determiners, adverbs, and interjections.
