Parallax scrolling is a design technique that creates a sense of depth by making distant background images move slowly and nearby object images move quickly when the user scrolls with the mouse. It is implemented by splitting one image into multiple layers and adjusting each layer's speed of response to scrolling differently. The technique had been used in animation since the 1930s, but became usable in web design with the introduction of HTML5 and CSS3 techniques.
