A paper (Korean: nonmun, 論文; North Korean standard Munhwaŏ: ronmun) is a piece of writing in which the author logically sets out their academic research results, opinions, or arguments on a topic, written coherently and systematically according to a set format.

In English it is also called a thesis, dissertation, or paper. Thesis comes from the Greek θέσις, meaning an intellectual proposition, and dissertation comes from the Latin dissertātiō, meaning a discourse.

Papers include theses written to obtain a degree such as a master's or doctorate, academic papers presented in academic journals or at conferences, and papers for publication.

A paper usually consists of a title, an abstract, a table of contents, an introduction, a body, a conclusion, and a list of references. An appendix is sometimes added. The length of a thesis is relatively flexible, but doctoral dissertations, which require in-depth research, tend to be longer than bachelor's and master's theses. Academic papers, on the other hand, usually have their length limited by the journal's or conference's submission guidelines, sometimes by specifying the number of pages, words, or characters.
