Overview

  • An agile development technique
  • Coding and code review at the same time
  • Two programmers working together at one computer
  • Driver: the person who writes the code
  • Observer (observer, pointer, naviagator): the person who reviews the code alongside
  • Switch roles frequently

Driver

  • Operates the keyboard and writes the code directly.
  • Works while explaining out loud every code element being written, so the navigator can discuss it.
  • Must respond constructively to the navigator's questions and opinions; the navigator's input is part of the process, so the driver must not get annoyed or defensive.
  • If the driver is running while looking at the trees in front of them, the navigator should look over the big map and guide the way to the destination.
  • The navigator watches the driver's work, gives advice where they think there is a better way, asks questions whenever something is unclear, and should be able to point out right away anything they think is wrong.
