PCI Express is a serial input/output interface specified by PCI-SIG in 2002, created under Intel's leadership. Its official abbreviation is PCIe. It was developed to replace the older PCI, PCI-X, and AGP buses. Compared with those bus standards, PCIe has many advantages, including higher system bus bandwidth, fewer I/O pins, a smaller physical footprint, better performance scalability for bus devices, a detailed error detection and reporting structure (Advanced Error Reporting (AER)), and native hot-plug functionality. Recently it also supports hardware I/O virtualization.

PCIe 3.0 is the latest version for expansion cards currently in production and is used in mainstream personal computers.
