Optics is the study of the properties of light.

Since the early days of human civilization, light has been discussed and studied across many disciplines, including physics, philosophy, medicine, and theology. Euclid wrote in his works about the rectilinear propagation of light and the law of reflection; Aristotle, Ptolemy, and others also dealt with the nature of light, and medieval philosophers such as Bacon and Witelo were likewise interested in its properties. The medieval Islamic scientist Alhazen recorded phenomena he observed directly, such as the rectilinear propagation, dispersion, reflection, and refraction of light, in the Book of Optics. Alhazen's Book of Optics was translated into Latin in 1270 and had a great influence on scientific research in Europe.
