Features

• Open Codex is a fully open-source, CLI-based AI coding assistant inspired by OpenAI Codex
  • Initially intended to fork OpenAI, but due to code issues and compatibility, it was rebuilt from scratch in Python
• Runs locally without an API key, using language models such as phi-4-mini, with more models planned
• Converts natural-language commands into shell commands and asks for confirmation before running them
• Easy to install via Homebrew, pipx, or git clone without a complicated setup
• Supports Mac, Linux, and Windows
• You can choose to copy to clipboard, run, or abort
• Currently supports only one-shot mode; interactive mode and function calling are planned
• Colored terminal output improves readability
