An open API (Open Application Programming Interface, Open API, public API) is an API that is publicly available for anyone to use, giving developers programmatic access to proprietary application software or web services.

Google Maps is a representative example. Open APIs are being tried in map services and many other services, and have the advantage that anyone can access and use them. Metablogs are also built using open APIs.
