Self-hosted Cloudflare Workers implemented in Rust

About

  • OpenWorkers is an open-source runtime that runs JavaScript on V8, letting you implement edge computing on your own infrastructure
  • Supports KV storage, PostgreSQL, S3/R2-compatible storage, service bindings, environment variables, and secrets
  • Maintains high compatibility with Cloudflare Workers, including major Web APIs such as fetch, ReadableStream, and crypto.subtle
  • Simple self-hosting through V8 Isolate sandboxing, cron scheduling, Docker Compose-based deployment, and more
  • A project developed over about 7 years, aiming for a JavaScript execution environment without vendor lock-in

OpenWorkers overview

  • OpenWorkers is a Cloudflare Workers-compatible runtime written in Rust that runs JavaScript using V8 Isolates
    • The benefits of edge computing are available in your own server environment too
    • Released as open source, so it can be freely distributed and modified

Key features

  • Integrates with various external resources through Bindings
    • KV storage: supports get, put, delete, list
    • PostgreSQL database integration
    • S3/R2-compatible storage support
    • Includes service bindings, environment variables, and secret management
  • Web API support
    • Provides standard APIs such as fetch, Request, Response, ReadableStream
    • Includes crypto.subtle, TextEncoder/Decoder, Blob, setTimeout, AbortController

Architecture

  • The system consists of an nginx proxy, dashboard, API, log service, runners, PostgreSQL, NATS, scheduler, and more
    • Each runner executes code inside a V8 Isolate, with limits of 100ms CPU and 128MB memory
    • Includes a built-in scheduler supporting 5–6 field cron syntax
    • Maintains syntax compatibility with Cloudflare Workers

Self-hosting

  • Deployment needs only a single PostgreSQL database and a Docker Compose file
    • Easily run with git clone, .env configuration, and the docker compose up command
    • Includes migration and token generation steps
