openSUSE is a general-purpose operating system built on the Linux kernel. It is developed by the community supported by the openSUSE Project and sponsored by Novell. After acquiring SUSE Linux in January 2004, Novell decided to release the SUSE Linux Professional product as a fully open-source project and allowed the community to take part in the development process.
